[Asia Economy Reporter Joo-mi Lee] Jeong Se-gyun, a presidential candidate from the Democratic Party, proposed a "100 million won savings account for 20-year-old youth" as his first presidential pledge.
On the afternoon of the 29th, during a lecture titled "The New Role of Politics in the Post-Corona Era" held at Gwangju University in Nam-gu, Gwangju, Jeong said, "We are designing a policy to support 100 million won over 20 years through the Future Seed Account system, so that all newborns can build a foundation for independence without relying on parental support when they become young adults."
Jeong advocated for an "innovative economy" and a "care society" for a "better recovery" after COVID-19. The Future Seed Account system was proposed as part of policies related to the care society.
Regarding the innovative economy, Jeong said, "Innovation is a process where various ideas are tested in the world, and if they fail, they are retried. Bold investment in future productivity, establishment of an innovative lifelong education system, and social investment to create quality jobs are necessary."
He continued, "The state and society must strive to establish a 'social inheritance' system to help young people build assets," introducing the Future Seed Account system. A spokesperson from Jeong’s camp emphasized, "The goal is to help young people reduce the burden of university tuition and housing costs so they can pursue their dreams."
Jeong also announced a pledge for government support in vocational skill development. He said, "We are creating a 'national study account' with a certain amount per citizen to support capacity development, and are seeking innovative improvements in university education and vocational training systems to ensure that training programs desired by learners are adequately provided."
Meanwhile, starting with a visit to Bongha Village in Gyeongbuk on the 25th, Jeong has been visiting Busan-Gyeongnam, Daegu-Gyeongbuk, and Honam regions to gauge public sentiment. On the 30th, he plans to move to Daejeon to visit youth startups and continue meeting with citizens.
