[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The number of COVID-19 confirmed student cases over the past week was 350, a decrease of 19 from the previous week.
On the 29th, the Ministry of Education announced that from the 22nd to the 28th, a total of 350 kindergarten, elementary, middle, and high school students and 64 staff members tested positive for COVID-19. Compared to the previous week, student cases decreased by 19 and staff cases decreased by 2.
At two elementary schools in Gimhae, Gyeongnam, where a cluster infection originated from a private academy, a total of 22 people (including 1 teacher) were confirmed positive. All 780 related individuals tested negative. In two elementary schools in Buk-gu, Ulsan, 15 confirmed cases (including 2 teachers) were reported.
Student cases slightly decreased compared to the previous week, with cumulative confirmed cases nearing 3,000. On average, 50 students and 9.1 staff members were confirmed positive daily. Student cases peaked in the first and second weeks of April and have been declining for two consecutive weeks.
As of 10 a.m. on the day, 110 schools (0.5%) were unable to conduct in-person classes, a decrease of 74 schools from the previous week. Fifty-eight schools (0.3%) implemented discretionary holidays. Schools unable to conduct in-person classes included ▲Seoul 35 schools ▲Gyeonggi 23 schools ▲Ulsan 8 schools ▲Gyeongbuk 8 schools.
The number of kindergarten, elementary, middle, and high school students attending in-person classes (as of 4 p.m. the previous day) was 4,424,085, accounting for 74.6% of all students. The number of students unable to attend due to COVID-19 was 44,662, of whom 11,218 were in self-quarantine due to confirmed cases or contact.
Over the past week, 116 university students and 15 university staff members tested positive. The number of university student cases decreased by 40 compared to the previous week. On average, 16.6 university students and 2.1 staff members were confirmed positive daily. Cumulative confirmed cases are 1,118 university students and 123 university staff members.
