[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Starting next year, new students admitted to gifted schools who apply to medical or pharmacy schools will be advised to transfer to general high schools. Applicants will also be required to pledge adherence to restrictions related to medical and pharmacy school admissions on the gifted school application form.

On the 29th, the Association of Gifted School Principals announced that they have jointly prepared the "Restriction Measures on Gifted School Students' Admission to Medical and Pharmaceutical Fields" and will reflect these measures in the 2022 academic year admission guidelines. The admission guidelines containing these restrictions for each gifted school will be announced on either April 30 or May 1.

The schools involved are Gyeonggi Science High School, Gwangju Science High School, Daegu Science High School, Daejeon Science High School, Seoul Science High School, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology-affiliated Korea Science Academy of KAIST, Sejong Science and Arts Gifted School, and Incheon Science and Arts Gifted School.

The restriction measures on admission to medical and pharmaceutical fields at gifted schools were created to strengthen career and academic guidance in science and engineering fields. Applicants must pledge to these restrictions to submit their applications. Gifted schools have specified that if students wish to pursue or apply to medical and pharmaceutical fields after admission, the school will not provide any university admission counseling or guidance and will recommend transferring to general high schools or similar institutions.

Instead of providing grades, the 'Academic Performance Status' section of the school life record, which is necessary for university admission screening, will provide rank-based evaluations. Additional educational programs such as research activities operated by the gifted schools will not be recorded. Some sections, such as creative experiential activities, will be left blank.

Furthermore, students wishing to enter medical and pharmaceutical fields will have restricted access to school facilities such as dormitories and study rooms outside of regular classes. They will also be required to return additional educational expenses invested in the gifted school curriculum and scholarships received during their enrollment at the gifted school.

The eight gifted schools have agreed to apply these restriction measures as much as possible to current students as well, according to each school's circumstances, to strengthen career and academic guidance in science and engineering fields.

The Association of Gifted School Principals stated, "Gifted schools were established to nurture outstanding talents in science and engineering, and it is not desirable for gifted school students to pursue medical and pharmaceutical fields. We hope that this measure will encourage more gifted school students to enter science and engineering fields and play a significant role in the advancement of science and technology."
