[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jihwan] PKF Seohyun Accounting Corporation held the 2nd Seohyun Energy Forum on the 23rd at the Seohyun Accounting Corporation conference room under the theme "The Role of Power Generation Public Enterprises in Achieving Carbon Neutrality and Government Tasks."
The forum was attended by consulting division executives including Seohyun Accounting Corporation CEO Bae Hong-gi, Energy Consulting Headquarters Director Lee Seong-o, and Financial Advisory Business Department Head Kim Byung-hwan, as well as energy-related academic experts. The forum chair was Professor Ryu Kwon-hong from the School of Law at Wonkwang University.
On the day, presenter Professor Yoo Seung-hoon of Seoul National University of Science and Technology gave a presentation on topics such as the smooth implementation of Coal to Gas for achieving carbon neutrality, early fuel conversion of some coal power plants, and the expansion of carbon-neutral business.
Professor Yoo emphasized, "It is important for power generation public enterprises and other energy-related companies to smoothly implement the decommissioning of existing facilities and fuel conversion according to the Basic Plan for Electricity Supply and Demand and the coal power generation cap system in response to carbon neutrality," adding, "a comprehensive change in the energy system is necessary to achieve the carbon neutrality goal." To this end, he proposed government tasks including upholding the principle of a just transition, establishing a coal phase-out roadmap, and defining the role of LNG power generation.
Discussants explained that to achieve the national goal of carbon neutrality, the share of renewable energy inevitably must be greatly expanded. However, they mentioned that alternatives ensuring reliability and power security must be presented together. They also agreed that the energy transition should not become a negative factor that undermines our industrial competitiveness.
Seohyun Accounting Corporation stated that through the Seohyun Energy Forum, it plans to continuously provide energy-related information and propose measures on current issues to energy-related companies in the Republic of Korea.
