Tightly Contested Beyond Margin of Error
Significant Variations by Support Party
[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] Opinions favoring the relaxation of the comprehensive real estate tax (종부세) imposition criteria for properties with a current official land price of 900 million won or more (47.5%) surpassed opposing opinions (maintaining the current criteria) (39.9%). The difference between the two opinions is 7.6 percentage points, which is outside the ±3.1 percentage point margin of error.
Perspectives on the 종부세 discussion sharply diverged depending on which political party respondents support. Among supporters of the Democratic Party of Korea, 27% agreed with "relaxing the 종부세 criteria," while 62.8% opposed it. 10.1% responded that they were unsure. Supporters of the Justice Party and the Open Democratic Party, which are included in the ruling coalition, also showed similar trends, with 34.7% and 30.6% respectively supporting the relaxation of the 종부세 criteria.
On the other hand, 66.1% of People Power Party supporters favored relaxing the 종부세, while 22.9% opposed it, showing a completely opposite pattern to Democratic Party supporters. 10.9% responded that they were unsure. Supporters of the People Party also responded with 67% in favor of relaxing the 종부세 criteria and 21.7% opposed.
Regional differences in views were also clearly evident due to the real estate issue. In Seoul, where housing prices rose significantly, 54.8% supported "relaxing the 종부세 criteria," the highest percentage among regions. This was followed by Gyeonggi·Incheon (49.2%), Daejeon·Sejong·Chungcheong (48.7%), Busan·Ulsan·Gyeongnam (47.9%), and Daegu·Gyeongbuk (45.3%). Gwangju·Jeolla (38.8%) and Gangwon·Jeju (23.3%) followed.
By age group, those aged 70 and above showed the highest support for "relaxing the 종부세 criteria" at 60.6%, followed by those in their 60s (56.0%), 50s (45.6%), 18?29 (47.2%), 30s (41.2%), and 40s (38.6%). Among those who negatively evaluated the president’s national administration, 60.9% supported relaxing the 종부세, and 65.1% of respondents who do not support the president also favored the relaxation.
