[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Midam] The owner of a restaurant in Sejong City, who made hundreds of millions in sales by falsely labeling the origin of food ingredients, has been sentenced to a fine.
On the 26th, Judge Park Junbeom of the Daejeon District Court Criminal Division 5 announced that A, who was indicted for violating the Act on the Labeling of Origin of Agricultural and Fishery Products, was sentenced to a fine of 10 million won.
The court stated, "There is a clear difference in public preference between domestic and imported beef," and added, "It is practically impossible to restore the damage to consumers who mistakenly purchased food believing it contained at least Hanwoo as an ingredient."
A in their 30s, who operates a restaurant in the administrative city of Sejong, sold Yukjeon made with U.S. beef ingredients from July 2019, but failed to label the origin for one month while selling Yukjeon made with Australian beef.
By June of the following year, approximately 13,000 servings of Yukjeon were sold at this restaurant without Hanwoo, amounting to about 175 million won. It was reported that government officials from the Government Complex Sejong and Sejong City Hall frequently visited this restaurant during lunchtime.
