Gwangjin District Council Adopts Resolution Urging Strong Suspension of Japan Fukushima Nuclear Plant Contaminated Water Discharge Decision

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] The Gwangjin District Council (Chairperson Park Samrye) closed the 244th extraordinary session after three days of proceedings on the 23rd.

The extraordinary session, which began with the 1st plenary session on the 21st, reviewed agenda items by standing committees on the 22nd, and concluded on the 23rd after processing a total of seven items including ordinances.

Chairperson Park Samrye expressed warm greetings, saying, "I am glad to meet again in good health, receiving the energy of the new spring, and I hope the warm spring sunshine permeates everywhere for the residents." She continued, "Vaccination is the best means to protect family and neighbors, and I ask all residents to actively participate to return to a safe daily life." Finally, she promised, "The 16th was the 7th anniversary of the Sewol ferry disaster, and the Gwangjin District Council will do its best to overcome and leap forward without forgetting the past pain."

The seven agenda items submitted during this session are as follows.

“Ordinance on Support for Single-Parent Families in Gwangjin District, Seoul” (Councilor Park Sunbok)

“Ordinance on Support for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes Patients in Gwangjin District, Seoul” (Councilor Jeon Eunhye)

“Partial Amendment Ordinance on the Operation of Active Administration in Gwangjin District, Seoul” (Gwangjin District Mayor)

“Partial Amendment Ordinance on the Composition and Operation of the Public Officials Ethics Committee in Gwangjin District, Seoul” (Gwangjin District Mayor)

“Ordinance on Symbols of Gwangjin District, Seoul” (Gwangjin District Mayor)

“Partial Amendment Ordinance on the Treatment and Support for National Veterans in Gwangjin District, Seoul” (Gwangjin District Mayor)

“Report on the Recommissioning of the Childcare Comprehensive Support Center” (Gwangjin District Mayor)

Among the submitted agenda items, two were proposed by councilors, both aimed at supporting groups facing social and economic difficulties.

First, Councilor Jeon Eunhye proposed the “Ordinance on Support for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes Patients” to ensure that pediatric and adolescent patients, who may have their basic rights restricted due to illness, can enjoy sufficient rights to education and health. Councilor Park Sunbok proposed the “Ordinance on Support for Single-Parent Families” to establish support measures so that single-parent families, who may face difficulties due to social prejudice and educational limitations, can live healthy and stable lives within the local community.

Notably, during this extraordinary session, a resolution condemning the Japanese government’s decision to discharge contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant and urging the suspension of the “Basic Policy on Treated Water Disposal” was adopted, drawing attention.

On April 13, the Japanese government announced the “Basic Policy on Treated Water Disposal including Multi-Nuclide Removal Equipment at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.” In response, the Gwangjin District Council, with all 14 councilors jointly issuing the resolution, strongly condemned the decision to discharge contaminated water, which threatens human life and causes ecological destruction, for failing to conduct sufficient consultations with neighboring countries and stakeholders, and urged its suspension.
