"I Have Never Left the Party Since Entering Politics"
"Not Seeking New Colors... Focusing on Surpassing Our Predecessors"
[Asia Economy, reporter Koo Chae-eun] On April 22, Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jaemyung stated, "I, too, will help push the cart that President Moon Jae-in has been leading at the forefront, together with the Democratic Party members."
On his Facebook page that day, Governor Lee said, "Some are trying to create division by claiming that my recent remarks indicate I am trying to differentiate myself from the government, but I am simply seeking to inherit and further develop the Democratic Party's direction." Recently, Governor Lee called for verification of the introduction of the Russian vaccine and expressed his views on real estate policy and other issues. As a result, some have interpreted his actions as an attempt to set himself apart from the ruling party and the government.
In response, Governor Lee emphasized, "Since entering politics, I have never left the party, nor do I intend to in the future," and added, "I will do my utmost, together with Democratic Party members, to help push the cart that President Moon Jae-in, who is leading the third democratic government on the spirit of the Candlelight Revolution, has been pulling at the forefront."
He continued, "While there may be some differences as we fill in what was lacking and add what is needed on top of past achievements, there can be no intentional differentiation. Rather than erasing previous colors and seeking new ones, we must focus our efforts on surpassing our predecessors."
He also said, "At times, a vocal minority may be overrepresented as if they speak for the whole, but this is something we must accept as a characteristic of democracy. That is why we must be even more vigilant against tendencies that go against democratic principles." He added, "The reason President Roh Moo-hyun dreamed of a 'Republic of Debate' from the time he was elected until after his retirement was ultimately because the principles of democracy are based on 'diversity,' not 'uniformity.'"
