Campaign to Reduce Single-Use Items on 'Earth Day'
From Now On, 'Single-Use Spoons and Forks' Provided Only Upon Request
Delivery 3 Companies "Striving to Establish Eco-Friendly Delivery Culture"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] The three leading domestic delivery applications are joining forces with the Ministry of Environment to promote eco-friendly practices by reducing the use of disposable spoons.
Baedal Minjok, Yogiyo, and Coupang Eats announced on the 22nd, in celebration of 'Earth Day,' that they will jointly conduct a campaign to reduce the use of disposable tableware to establish an eco-friendly delivery culture.
Starting June 1, the three delivery apps will implement an option feature in each app so that disposable tableware such as spoons and forks, which were previously provided by default with packaging and delivery orders, will only be provided upon separate request.
The setting will be changed so that disposable spoons and forks, which were previously provided by default, will now only be provided when customers specifically request them. Customers who need disposable spoons must select 'Request disposable spoon, fork' directly in the order request section within the app to make a separate request.
The three delivery apps agreed to apply this selection feature within their services to create an environment where plastic usage can be easily reduced, in response to the recent environmental issues caused by plastic waste.
Kim Beom-jun, CEO of Woowa Brothers, said, "By introducing a common policy among the three delivery apps to address environmental issues, user confusion will decrease and the effect of environmental protection is expected to increase. Baemin will continue to take the lead in discovering and applying various eco-friendly policies."
Kang Shin-bong, CEO of Delivery Hero Korea, stated, "We are pleased that the three delivery apps have come together to establish a foundation where disposable product use can be reduced easily and conveniently. We will continue to do our best to provide eco-friendly delivery services to both consumers and restaurant partners."
Park Dae-jun, CEO of Coupang New Business Division, said, "The three delivery apps have decided to actively cooperate through a campaign to reduce disposable products in response to the global environmental concerns. Coupang will continuously develop various eco-friendly services across all service areas to provide an amazing customer experience."
Meanwhile, Baedal Minjok, Yogiyo, and Coupang Eats have taken the lead in reducing plastic waste and have been continuously consulting with related organizations such as the Ministry of Environment. The three delivery apps stated, "We will continue to make efforts to establish an eco-friendly delivery culture."
