Jungnang-gu Selected for Seoul City Public Contest 'Neighborhood Learning Center Project' for 3 Consecutive Years

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) has been selected for the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s ‘Neighborhood Learning Center Operation Project Within One Step’ for three consecutive years and will operate 16 neighborhood learning centers this year.

The ‘Neighborhood Learning Center’ project utilizes idle local spaces as learning spaces for residents, enabling them to participate in lifelong learning close to their homes.

Following this selection, the district will invest approximately 110 million KRW received from Seoul and about 74 million KRW from the district budget to operate 109 lifelong learning programs at 16 neighborhood learning centers starting in May.

Notably, this year, Jungnang-gu operates the largest number of neighborhood learning centers among the selected autonomous districts, and the 10 newly established centers reflect the results of the 2020 consulting support project network.

Additionally, by leveraging the network of lifelong learning-related institutions within the district, various programs at the neighborhood learning centers are connected to learning-practice project activities, creating opportunities to promote residents’ participation in the local community.

The district is currently recruiting students to participate in the neighborhood learning center programs. A variety of programs tailored to the characteristics of each neighborhood are available, including humanities, general knowledge, crafts, and digital literacy.

Since the application period and methods differ by learning center, applicants should refer to the Jungnang-gu Lifelong Learning Center website for details and apply accordingly.

Program tuition is free, but learners must cover material costs. After completing courses, participants can also join 45 ‘learning-practice project activities’ such as talent donation and presentations based on what they have learned.

Last year, 68 programs tailored to each neighborhood’s characteristics were operated, attracting 959 residents and receiving great responses.

Ryu Kyung-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, said, “This year, we have prepared distinctive programs for each neighborhood so that residents can learn, share, and grow together. We will strive to establish Jungnang-gu as a prestigious lifelong education autonomous district through diverse lifelong education programs.”

Meanwhile, this year, the district integrated the existing 22 centers, including 11 Happy Learning Centers and 11 neighborhood learning centers, into 16 neighborhood learning centers.

The neighborhood learning centers to be operated are ▲Myeonmok re-bon Neighborhood Learning Center (Myeonmok Bon-dong) ▲Myeonieum Neighborhood Learning Center (Myeonmok 2-dong) ▲Seoil Neighborhood Learning Center (Myeonmok 3 & 8-dong) ▲Heo Heo Heo Neighborhood Learning Center (Myeonmok 4-dong) ▲Myeonmok Neighborhood Learning Center (Myeonmok 5-dong) ▲Haengbokteo Neighborhood Learning Center (Myeonmok 7-dong) ▲Ssok Ssok Neighborhood Learning Center (Sangbong 1-dong) ▲Women Up Neighborhood Learning Center (Sangbong 1-dong) ▲Sangbong Neighborhood Learning Center (Sangbong 2-dong) ▲Geurida Neighborhood Learning Center (Junghwa 1-dong) ▲Sohaengseong Neighborhood Learning Center (Junghwa 2-dong) ▲Kkomjirak Neighborhood Learning Center (Muk 1-dong) ▲Jageun Sarang Taecheong Neighborhood Learning Center (Muk 2-dong) ▲Bobaeteo Neighborhood Learning Center (Mangwoo 3-dong) ▲Nabiuchae Neighborhood Learning Center (Sinnae 1-dong) ▲Shin2naneun Neighborhood Learning Center (Sinnae 2-dong), totaling 16 centers.
