[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Namdong-gu, Incheon, is promoting an urban regeneration project that reflects a women-friendly perspective for socially vulnerable groups.
On the 21st, the district announced that it will carry out a community capacity-building project to create a women-friendly village in collaboration with the urban regeneration community "Kkotpineun Namchon Dure" in the Namchon-dong area.
This project supports the community itself in deriving village agendas and finding solutions during the urban regeneration process that incorporates a women-friendly perspective.
With the participation of village activists (Namdong-gu Women-Friendly City Creation Advisory Group), topics suitable for the village characteristics will be selected, and step-by-step workshops such as discussions, surveys, and field investigations will be conducted.
The Namchon-dong area is a mix of low-rise aging residential areas and declining alley commercial districts, but recently, with the relocation of the agricultural and marine products wholesale market, it has great development potential and active resident gatherings.
In particular, "Kkotpineun Namchon Dure," established in 2019, has an organizational system such as a cooperative, organizes a village press corps to publish a village newspaper, and holds village festivals, demonstrating a high level of understanding and achievements in urban regeneration.
Gong Byunghwa, representative of Kkotpineun Namchon Dure, said, "Through this project, we will review our capabilities and prepare firmly from the basics to promote an urban regeneration project in which residents actively participate and create."
The district will hold meetings every third Tuesday of the month until October with themes such as ▲women-friendly city activity cases ▲gender-sensitive monitoring methods ▲gender governance to change local communities ▲ways to improve urban spaces with a gender perspective ▲workshops to discover community projects.
Lee Kangho, mayor of the district, said, "With Namdong-gu designated as a women-friendly city, we have taken on greater responsibility and pride to promote this community capacity-building project," adding, "We hope that the Namdong-gu style urban regeneration project will be revitalized with the high participation and interest of Namchon-dong residents."
