[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Jae-ho] The Kimcheon University squash team established itself as the strongest college team by achieving back-to-back national tournament victories immediately after its founding.
According to Kimcheon University on the 21st, the university's squash team won the doubles title at the '1st Taesan Cup National Squash Championship' held on the 14th, with players Lee Yong-jeong (Department of Aviation and Hotel Management) and Kim Seung-hyun (Department of Aviation and Hotel Management) taking first place.
Additionally, in the men's singles college division, player Kim Seung-hyun secured the runner-up position. This tournament was newly established to honor the legacy of Kim Won-gwan (pen name Taesan), the pioneer of the squash world and senior vice president of the Asian Federation.
Earlier, at the 17th Korea Sports Council President's Cup National Squash Championship, which opened on the 1st, players Lee Yong-jeong and Kim Seung-hyun also claimed the men's college doubles championship trophy.
The Kimcheon University squash team's consecutive national tournament victories were achieved less than a month after its founding on March 20, generating significant attention in the sports community. On the same day, the university's newly established badminton team also set a remarkable record by winning medals at the 'National Winter College Championships' held on March 7, prior to their inauguration ceremony.
Head coach Jeong Chang-wook, who trained the players tirelessly even on holidays to achieve the championship and runner-up results, credited all the success to the players, saying, "I was worried about the lack of experience of a newly founded team, but thanks to the players' wise responses, even the coach has become famous."
Yoon Ok-hyun, president of Kimcheon University, stated, "Just as a small sports team from a regional university demonstrated the strength to defeat teams from large metropolitan universities, the greatest achievement is that all members of the university can gain confidence to face and overcome various challenges rather than fear them."
Kim Chung-seop, mayor of Kimcheon City, encouraged the Kimcheon University squash team, saying, "We aimed to revitalize the local economy by hosting the national squash tournament, and by showing outstanding results with both championship and runner-up titles from a local university, the status of Kimcheon as a specialized sports city has been elevated."
