Strawberries Selected for 5 Consecutive Years, Dried Persimmons Chosen 5 Times

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] ‘Jirisan Sancheong Strawberry and Dried Persimmon’ have both won the ‘Korea Representative Brand Award’.
‘Jirisan Sancheong Strawberry’ has been selected as a Korea representative brand for five consecutive years, and a total of six times since 2008. ‘Jirisan Sancheong Dried Persimmon’ has been selected five times since 2016, earning its well-deserved reputation as the best nationwide.
On the 20th, at the ‘2021 Korea Representative Brand Award’ ceremony held at the Shilla Hotel in Seoul, the local specialties strawberry and dried persimmon received the grand prize.
Sancheong Strawberry, selected as the representative brand for local specialties in the strawberry category by local governments for five consecutive years up to this year, is a key crop for the county, with about 800 farms producing 15,000 metric tons (M/T) over 400 hectares, generating an annual high income of 100 billion KRW.
Sancheong Strawberries are pollinated using honeybees for both female and male flowers and are cultivated in an eco-friendly manner. They are highly praised by consumers in large cities for their high sugar content as well as firm and dense flesh.
‘Jirisan Sancheong Dried Persimmon’ was selected as the Korea representative brand in the dried persimmon category for local specialties by local governments.
The elder persimmon variety of Sancheong, Sancheonggo Jongsil, was selected as Korea’s representative fruit for five consecutive years from 2016 to 2020.
Sancheong County and the Jirisan Sancheong Dried Persimmon Producers Association hold the ‘Jirisan Sancheong Dried Persimmon Festival’ every year to widely promote the excellent quality of Sancheong dried persimmons to consumers and enhance brand awareness.
Thanks to the enthusiasm sparked by Park Hang-seo, a national hero from Sancheong County and coach of Vietnam, Sancheong dried persimmons and strawberries achieved export results of 3.2 million USD (approximately 3.56 billion KRW) last year to Southeast Asia as well as the United States and Canada.
Lee Jae-geun, the mayor of Sancheong County, said, “The selection of Sancheong dried persimmons and strawberries as the nation’s top brands is thanks to the passion of our local farmers,” and added, “We will continue to do our best to produce local specialties that consumers can trust even more.”
