[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Dong-hoon] The delivery workers' union announced that CJ Logistics has agreed to use low-floor vehicles for deliveries in the underground parking lot of a large apartment complex in Gangdong-gu, Seoul, where conflicts have arisen due to vehicle access restrictions, and that it will file a complaint against the CEO for violating the Industrial Safety and Health Act (ISHA).
The National Delivery Workers' Union of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions Service Federation held a press conference on the 20th in front of CJ Logistics headquarters in Jung-gu, Seoul, stating, "We plan to file a complaint against Kang Shin-ho, CEO of CJ Logistics, and the agency manager responsible for the A apartment complex area in Gangdong-gu."
The delivery workers' union claimed, "Low-floor vehicles, which are designed in a way that workers have to bend their backs or crawl on their knees when loading and unloading delivery items, are clear industrial safety hazards that cause serious musculoskeletal disorders."
Article 5 of the Industrial Safety and Health Act, 'Duties of Employers,' stipulates that employers must take preventive measures against musculoskeletal disorders according to the rules on industrial safety and health standards.
As evidence of the agreement between CJ Logistics and the residents' representative council, the union disclosed a letter sent by the residents' representative council to the union on the 13th. The letter explicitly stated, "Consultations with the CJ Logistics apartment delivery team (agreement to implement underground delivery for all vehicles after a grace period for the introduction of low-floor vehicles)."
The union added, "Despite the unilateral decision by the apartment complex causing delivery service problems and affiliated workers suffering unfair power harassment, the delivery company has not presented any countermeasures. Rather, it has sided with the abusive apartment complex and imposed long hours of high-intensity labor on delivery workers."
The union plans to hold a delegates' meeting on the 25th to decide whether to initiate a strike.
