Providing Community Problem-Solving Services Such as Highly Perceptible and Commercially Viable Safe Walking and Smart Clean Road (Automatic Sprinkler System)
[Asia Economy Reporter Jo Gang-wook] The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 20th that it has finalized the selection of 15 sites for the ‘Living-Oriented Urban Regeneration Smart Technology Support Project,’ which applies smart technologies that are highly perceptible to residents and easy to commercialize to urban regeneration New Deal project areas to solve local problems.
This project, newly launched since last year, provides up to 500 million KRW in national funding per project site. Local governments bear 40-60% of the project costs depending on the matching ratio of the urban regeneration project.
Among 26 applicants for the ‘Living-Oriented Urban Regeneration Smart Technology Support Project,’ 15 sites were selected based on resident feedback, necessity and feasibility, and the concreteness and promptness of project plans. The selected sites are Seoul (Seodaemun-gu), Daegu (Dalseo-gu, Dong-gu), Incheon (Dong-gu, Jung-gu), Gyeonggi (Gwangmyeong), Chungnam (Seosan, Cheonan), Jeonbuk (Gimje, Jeonju, Jeongeup), Gyeongbuk (Gyeongju, Seongju), Gyeongnam (Goseong), and Jeju (Seogwipo).
For example, in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, a smart safe walking project was selected. This project will establish a smart safe walking service by introducing intelligent CCTVs and speed violation warning devices near Gyeonggi-daero in Cheonyeon and Chunghyeon-dong. It automatically recognizes speeding vehicles and pedestrian approach information in blind spots and displays them on electronic signboards to encourage safe driving. It also ensures pedestrian safety through voice guidance devices and focused crosswalk lighting, while combining crime prevention devices such as emergency bells to enhance crime prevention effects.
The smart early warning service in Cheonan, Chungnam, uses a river water level gauge on the Cheonancheon stream to automatically block the river entrance when the water level rises above a certain threshold, ensuring the safety of residents using Cheonancheon. Additionally, collected water level data will be used to broadcast disaster early warnings before disasters occur and send text messages to residents living in low-lying areas to enable prompt evacuation.
National funding will be allocated to the 15 selected project sites starting next month, and the projects will officially commence. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport plans to thoroughly manage the projects by frequently checking progress to ensure swift implementation.
Park Sang-min, Director of the Urban Regeneration Division at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, said, "By integrating smart solutions into ongoing urban regeneration New Deal projects, we expect to create greater synergy in solving local problems," adding, "We will actively support smooth project implementation through close communication with local governments even after selection."
