Latin America-Based Diplomat Dies... Ministry of Foreign Affairs Tentatively Concludes Suicide "Under Investigation"

[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Kim] A diplomat in his 30s who was working in Latin America has died, prompting the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to launch an investigation.


On the 19th, a Ministry of Foreign Affairs official said that Mr. A, a foreign service officer who had been working in a Latin American country since March last year, was found dead at his residence on the 12th, "We are currently investigating the cause and background surrounding Mr. A's death." Based on the absence of signs of external intrusion and the local autopsy results, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Korean Embassy in the host country have tentatively concluded that Mr. A took his own life.


The embassy reported the incident to the local police and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs after becoming aware of it. After receiving the report, Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong is said to have ordered a thorough investigation into the motive behind the death.


A Ministry of Foreign Affairs official stated, "Due to consideration of the bereaved family and personal information, we cannot confirm specific details," adding, "We take this matter very seriously and cannot overlook it, so we plan to carefully examine it. We will take necessary measures as soon as we ascertain the facts."


The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently reported to be coordinating with the bereaved family to conduct the funeral and discuss related procedures.
