Construction to Begin Next Month on Gyeongdo Marine Tourism Complex Waterside Space... Opening in December 2024

Simultaneous Opening of Marine Cable Car, Marina, and Other Infrastructure Aligned with Causeway Opening Schedule

Construction to Begin Next Month on Gyeongdo Marine Tourism Complex Waterside Space... Opening in December 2024

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] The Kyungdo Marine Tourism Complex development project by the Mirae Asset consortium will begin construction of the marine waterfront space next month, marking the start of full-scale construction of tourism theme facilities that many tourists, including Yeosu citizens, can use.

The consortium analyzed global tourist destinations such as Sentosa in Singapore and Macau, as well as the latest tourism trends, and in December 2019 established a master plan worth 1.5 trillion KRW to cluster various tourism facilities including commercial facilities and a marina in the Sunrise Waterfront accommodation district, and will commence full-scale construction.

According to the Kyungdo district master plan, the tourism theme facilities to be introduced include indoor and outdoor water parks, a marina, a marine cable car, an entertainment center, large-scale commercial facilities, and a 1,000-seat conference hall located in the Sunrise Waterfront accommodation district due to facility clustering. Adjacent to these facilities are marine waterfront spaces, seawater pools, artificial beaches, marine leisure facilities, outdoor performance venues (plazas), and coastal walking paths. Additionally, two neighborhood parks will be installed near existing villages separately.

These tourism theme facilities will be accessible to citizens and tourists alike, and the construction is being promoted with the goal of completing and opening the accommodation facilities such as hotels and condos by December 2024, in line with the opening schedule of the connecting bridge.

The consortium is currently proceeding with administrative procedures such as marine area use consultations and shared water surface usage permits with Yeosu City and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries for the seawater pools, artificial beaches, and marine leisure facilities planned to be installed on the shared water surface adjacent to the marine waterfront space. Construction will begin immediately upon completion of these permits, with an opening scheduled for December 2024.

Other tourism facilities such as indoor and outdoor water parks, marine cable cars, large-scale commercial facilities, and marinas located in the Sunrise Waterfront accommodation district will begin construction in December next year after the relocation of Kyungho Elementary School is completed, with plans to finish by December 2024.

It is expected that after these tourism theme facilities are completed and begin operation in 2025, more than 3.85 million domestic and international tourists will visit annually, greatly contributing not only to the local tourism industry but also to the revitalization of the regional economy.
