[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Genesis unveiled its first-ever electric vehicle, the ‘G80 Electrified Model,’ in China on the 19th, which is interpreted as an ambition to simultaneously target both the Chinese and global electric vehicle markets.
The Chinese automotive market has been a challenging area for Hyundai Motor due to sluggish sales for several years. Hyundai Motor Group’s strategy is to expand its market share in China by leveraging premium eco-friendly vehicles, including Genesis and the Ioniq 5, which was also unveiled in China for the first time on the same day.
Maximum Driving Range 427km... 0-100km/h in 4.9 Seconds
The G80 Electrified Model is characterized by outstanding performance and design. Equipped with a large-capacity 87.2kWh battery, it offers a maximum driving range of 427km. With a 350kW ultra-fast charger, it can charge from 10% to 80% battery capacity within 22 minutes.
The G80 Electrified Model operates as a single AWD (all-wheel drive) model. It features motors on both the front and rear axles, each delivering a maximum output of 136kW and maximum torque of 350Nm, resulting in a combined maximum output of 272kW and combined maximum torque of 700Nm. This enables a 0-100km/h acceleration time of just 4.9 seconds.
It is equipped with a Disconnector Drive System (DAS) that can separate or connect the motor and drive shaft depending on driving conditions, allowing flexible switching of the drive mode. This technology minimizes unnecessary power loss and enables efficient driving. The combined energy efficiency is 4.3km/kWh based on 19-inch tires.
The G80 Electrified Model also features a quiet interior and smooth ride comfort. To achieve the brand’s highest level of quietness, Genesis applied Active Noise Control-Reduction (ANC-R) technology to the G80 Electrified Model. The front grille features an electric vehicle-exclusive G-Matrix pattern designed for aerodynamic efficiency, embodying Genesis’s unique electric vehicle image.
Genesis Electric Vehicles and Ioniq 5... Key Models for Reclaiming China
Hyundai Motor Group is launching a full-scale attack on the Chinese market, led by Genesis electric vehicles.
On the 15th, Hyundai Motor held an online strategic presentation titled ‘Rising again, For China,’ announcing four major strategies for a resurgence in the Chinese market.
Hyundai Motor Group is pursuing four key strategies: expanding the electrified product lineup, accelerating hydrogen fuel cell technology business and expanding the hydrogen industry ecosystem, renewing brand image, and localizing R&D (research and development).
In particular, premium eco-friendly vehicles led by Genesis and the Ioniq 5 are the core elements of the China strategy. Hyundai Motor Group plans to launch 21 eco-friendly vehicles, including electric vehicles, in China by 2030.
The electric vehicles Ioniq 5 and EV6, which are currently available for pre-order in Korea, are expected to be launched in China as early as this year, with plans to introduce dedicated electric vehicle models annually starting next year. In the second half of this year, Hyundai will launch Nexo, the world’s best-selling hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, in China.
Marcus Henne, head of Genesis China, said, "The world premiere of the G80 electric vehicle model demonstrates Genesis brand’s commitment to the Chinese market," adding, "Genesis will build genuine relationships through differentiated customer experiences for Chinese customers, focusing on flagship models G80 and GV80."
