Genesis Presents the First Electric Vehicle Model Based on the G80, Setting the Standard for Premium Large Electric Sedans
[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Genesis unveiled its first electric vehicle on the 19th. At the international motor show held in Shanghai, China, Genesis showcased its brand’s first electric vehicle, the ‘G80 Electrified Model.’
Genesis’s decision to reveal its first electric vehicle in China is interpreted as an ambition to simultaneously target both the Chinese and global electric vehicle markets. The Chinese automotive market has been a challenging area for Hyundai Motor Company due to sluggish sales for several years.
Hyundai Motor Group plans to expand its market share in China by leveraging premium eco-friendly vehicles such as Genesis and the Ioniq 5.
The G80 Electrified Model is characterized by outstanding performance and design. Equipped with a large-capacity 87.2kWh battery, it offers a maximum driving range of 427 km. With a 350kW ultra-fast charger, the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% within 22 minutes.
The G80 Electrified Model is offered as a single AWD (all-wheel drive) model. Motors delivering a maximum output of 136kW and maximum torque of 350Nm are applied to both the front and rear axles, resulting in a combined maximum output of 272kW and combined maximum torque of 700Nm. This enables a zero-to-100 km/h acceleration time of just 4.9 seconds.
It features a Disconnector Drive System (DAS) that can separate or connect the motor and drive shaft depending on driving conditions, allowing flexible switching of the drive mode. This technology minimizes unnecessary power loss and enables efficient driving. The combined energy consumption (fuel efficiency) is 4.3 km/kWh based on 19-inch tires.
The G80 Electrified Model is equipped with a V2L (Vehicle to Load) function that allows the vehicle to supply standard power (220V) from inside the car to external devices. This enables unrestricted use of electronic devices anytime and anywhere.
A ‘Solar Roof’ that charges the vehicle’s battery using solar energy is also applied. The Solar Roof can charge an average of 730Wh of power per day, which translates to an additional driving range of up to approximately 1,150 km annually.
Minimizing Noise with Latest Technology, Advantage of Smooth Ride
The quiet interior and smooth ride are also key features of the G80 Electrified Model. To secure the brand’s highest level of quietness, Genesis applied the active noise control technology ANC-R to the G80 Electrified Model.
The front grille features an electric vehicle-exclusive G-Matrix pattern designed for aerodynamic efficiency, embodying Genesis’s unique electric vehicle image. The charging port located at the top of the grille is designed so that its boundary is not visible when closed, making it appear as part of the grille. On the sides, new 19-inch turbine-shaped exclusive wheels were applied considering aerodynamic performance.
At the motor show, Genesis exhibited a total of eight vehicles in an 1800㎡ exhibition space, including the G80 Electrified Model, the Genesis X concept car, two representative luxury sedans G80, and four flagship SUVs GV80.
Marcus Henne, head of Genesis China, said, “The world premiere of the G80 electric vehicle model demonstrates Genesis brand’s commitment to the Chinese market. Genesis will build genuine relationships through differentiated customer experiences for Chinese customers centered on flagship models G80 and GV80.”
Meanwhile, Genesis held a brand launch event in Shanghai on the 2nd, officially declaring its entry into the Chinese market. On the 8th, it opened the first Genesis brand experience space in China, ‘Genesis Studio Shanghai,’ and plans to establish a second brand experience space in Chengdu next month.
