Baekhak Shopping District Renovated with 200m Section Landscape and Gobo Lighting... Total Budget of 70 Million Won with Resident Participation, Completed with Cooperation of Merchants and Residents
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Jung-gu, Seoul (Mayor Seoyangho) has completed the installation of nighttime landscape lighting at Baekhak Shopping Center in Sindang 5-dong, operating every evening from sunset until midnight.
Baekhak Market in Sindang 5-dong is a street specialized in late-night snacks, frequented by a large floating population using Sindang Station Lines 2 and 6, as well as young people.
The district installed nighttime landscape lighting through a resident participation budget, fulfilling a long-standing wish of the Baekhak Shopping Center merchants.
The district secured a total of 70 million KRW from the resident participation budget and completed the installation of about 830 external landscape lights and 6 gobo lights along approximately 200 meters of the main road of Baekhak Shopping Center.
Gobo lighting is a special lighting facility that projects letters and images onto dark streets during nighttime. It offers high visibility, providing excellent promotional effects while giving psychological stability to nighttime pedestrians. Along with external landscape lighting, it can have positive effects such as crime prevention and providing visual attractions.
The district held several briefing sessions to gather merchants' opinions, finalized the design, color, and gobo lighting messages for the nighttime landscape lighting installation, and signed an agreement with the merchants' association regarding maintenance.
On the 13th, strictly adhering to COVID-19 prevention guidelines, a lighting ceremony was held successfully with the attendance of National Assembly member Seongjun Park, Jung-gu Mayor Seoyangho, Baekhak Shopping Center Merchants' Association President Myungsik Kim, and other merchants.
This lighting ceremony is notable for being jointly conducted with the Baekhak Market Merchants' Association to enhance the responsibility and public nature of the store owners. In particular, President Myungsik Kim of the Merchants' Association read a "Declaration of Practice" on behalf of the merchants, pledging to comply with COVID-19 prevention guidelines and strive to create a safe market environment.
The merchants hope that through this renovation, Baekhak Market will be improved into a clean and safe market loved by residents, and that it will regain vitality in the economy, which has been depressed and darkened for over a year due to COVID-19.
Meanwhile, this year, Sindang 5-dong has started an urban regeneration project worth 10 billion KRW in the surrounding area including Baekhak Shopping Center, and the district has also launched a neighborhood management office project to expand resident convenience services such as safety and cleaning environment.
The President of Baekhak Market Merchants' Association stated, "Since good projects such as the urban regeneration project are underway in Sindang 5-dong, we will work hard to support and further strive for the development of Baekhak Market and Sindang 5-dong."
Jung-gu Mayor Seoyangho said, "I hope Baekhak Shopping Center overcomes the COVID-19 crisis well and regains vitality with the lighting of the nighttime landscape lighting at Baekhak Shopping Center," adding, "We will continue to work steadily with residents to create a bright and pleasant market environment."
