[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] Paju City in Gyeonggi Province is receiving applications from regions wishing to host an additional waste incineration plant, but residents of the affected areas are opposing the plan.

According to Paju City on the 18th, due to the aging and insufficient processing capacity of the incinerators located in Unjeong New Town and Nakha-ri, Tanhyeon-myeon, the city plans to build an additional facility and has announced a site selection plan.

The Nakha-ri incinerator has been operating since 2002 with a daily processing capacity of 200 tons and has been handling 30 tons of waste daily from Gimpo City as well.

Although an incinerator with a daily processing capacity of 90 tons is operating in Unjeong New Town, the city explains that the continuous influx of population and increasing waste have caused a shortage in processing capacity.

The city is promoting a large-scale facility with a daily processing capacity of 700 tons to handle waste from neighboring local governments, as well as a standalone facility with a capacity of 400 tons to process waste generated only in Paju.

The city plans to accept site applications from regions wishing to host the incinerator until June 10, and if no suitable sites are found, it will conduct further review and reannounce the plan.

In response, local residents are opposing the plan, saying, "The city is pushing forward without gathering public opinion from residents or following procedures such as providing specific justifications."
