[Asia Economy New York=Special Correspondent Baek Jong-min] U.S. President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga pledged cooperation between the two countries in the Indo-Pacific region during their first summit meeting held at the White House on the 16th (local time).

Before the expanded bilateral summit, President Biden said in his opening remarks, "I truly welcome such a close ally and good partner," emphasizing the significance of being the partner for his first face-to-face meeting since taking office.

He stated, "The United States and Japan have a significant agenda ahead of us," adding, "We are two important democracies in the Indo-Pacific region."

Prime Minister Suga responded, "Freedom, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law are universal values that connect our alliance," and said, "These are the very foundation for prosperity and stability in this region and around the world."

He continued, "To realize a free and open Indo-Pacific, there are shared challenges as well as new global issues including COVID-19 and climate change," and said, "I want to spend this time reaffirming the close ties between our two countries."

The two leaders are scheduled to hold a joint press conference after the expanded summit meeting.
