Damyang Office of Education Holds Memorial Event for the 7th Anniversary of the Sewol Ferry Tragedy


[Damyang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Damyang Office of Education (Superintendent Kim Cheolju) announced on the 16th that it held a memorial event to mark the 7th anniversary of the Sewol ferry disaster.


In accordance with social distancing measures due to COVID-19, the memorial moment of silence was conducted through the office's internal broadcast.


Also, Superintendent Kim Cheolju attended the Sewol ferry event organized by the student council of Damyang Girls' Middle School during school arrival time, sharing a meaningful time together.


At various schools in Damyang, student councils hosted diverse events such as sharing stories related to the Sewol ferry, making yellow ribbons for a memorial time, and continuing to read memorial writings. They also held a moment of silence to remember the victims of the Sewol ferry disaster, providing an opportunity to reflect on the significance of the April 16 Sewol ferry tragedy.


The Damyang Office of Education also reaffirmed its commitment to creating a ‘Safe School, New Education, and Happy Future’ by hanging Sewol ferry memorial banners, wearing Sewol ferry ribbon badges, and creating memorial phrases during the Sewol ferry disaster memorial period.


Superintendent Kim Cheolju said, “Since the Sewol ferry disaster on April 16, 2014, South Korea has been striving to build a safe society where life is respected,” adding, “We will remember all the victims, practice education that creates hope, and build new hopes for human rights, respect for life, and peace.”
