[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] Former Democratic Party leader Lee Nak-yeon stated on the 7th anniversary of the Sewol ferry disaster, "I pledge to fully uncover the truth."
Lee said, "Time passes, but the sorrow remains unchanged. The children did not return, and the parents cannot go back to the days before that tragedy. I am deeply sorry to the bereaved families who, despite such sorrow, continue to convey the value of life and safety to us."
He also mentioned, "It has been seven years since we vowed not to become adults who are apologetic. The shock and helplessness of that day have yet to be resolved."
Lee added, "Last December, the investigation period of the Sewol ferry disaster special committee was extended until June 2022. Just recently, the members who will recommend candidates for the special prosecutor to investigate the Sewol ferry disaster were appointed," and said, "As long as we remember and make efforts, the truth of the Sewol ferry disaster will eventually be revealed."
He concluded, "I once again pledge to the bereaved families and the public to fully uncover the truth. I also promise to build a 'Safe Republic of Korea' to ensure that such misfortunes never happen again."
