Gangbuk-gu Hosts the 4th 4·19 Revolution International Academic Conference

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gangbuk-gu (Mayor Park Kyum-soo) held the 4th 4·19 Revolution International Academic Conference on the 15th at the Hanshin University Seoul Campus Chapel as part of the ‘4·19 Revolution National Cultural Festival 2021.’

At the event, Professor Lee Ki-ho of Hanshin University served as the chair, and four presenters discussed ‘Challenges and Directions of Asian Democracy in the New Normal Era through the Spirit of the 4·19 Revolution.’

Due to the impact of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), overseas presenters participated in the conference using an online video conferencing system.

The academic conference featured presentations on ▲‘The April 1960 Revolution in Korea and the Qualitative Development of Democracy’ (Professor Kim Dong-chun, Sungkonghoe University) ▲Zigzag Development Path toward Sustainable Democracy (Professor Ohashi Masaaki, Seishin Joshi University, Japan) ▲Can Science and Democracy Go Together? (Professor Chen Xin-xing, Xinxin University, Taiwan) ▲Myanmar Coup and Civil Disobedience (Ekraji Sabur, Terrorism Prevention Officer, UN Office on Drugs and Crime Southeast Asia and Pacific Regional Office), among others.

After the presentations, heated discussions were held by Professor Lee Shin-chul of Sungkyunkwan University, Professor Lee Dae-hoon of Sungkonghoe University, Cha Mi-kyung, representative of ‘Friends of Asia,’ and Pastor Shin Seung-min, Secretary-General of the National Council of Churches in Korea and international advisory member of the 5·18 Memorial Foundation.

Park Kyum-soo, Mayor of Gangbuk-gu, said, “The international academic conference is a great opportunity for people around the world to share the noble meaning of the April Revolution together,” adding, “I hope that democracy in Asia, which is going through a crisis, will take the 4·19 Revolution as a beacon and move forward on the right path.”
