Gyeongnam Province Still Fails to Properly Manage Dust Pollution... 22 Business Sites Massively Caught

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Saeyan] A large number of business sites causing fugitive dust emissions in the Gyeongnam region have been caught.

The Gyeongsangnam-do Special Judicial Police (Provincial Special Judicial Police) announced on the 15th that a total of 22 sites were caught during inspections of fugitive dust emission sites from February 3 to April 9.

Among the violations, 15 cases involved judicial offenses such as failing to install facilities to suppress fugitive dust emissions or not implementing required measures.

Among these, 4 cases have completed investigations and were sent to the prosecution with a recommendation for indictment.

The remaining 7 cases were administrative violations due to non-compliance with standards, and the responsible city and county offices were instructed to ensure improvements.

The main types of violations included cases where dust and soil stuck to the wheels of transport vehicles were not washed off and side watering was not performed, causing fugitive dust on surrounding roads, and cases where waste disposal companies were caught operating while illegally stockpiling and storing waste without installing dustproof covers.

In particular, Company A was caught again in this inspection for failing to install dustproof covers on stockpiled materials, despite having received administrative sanctions from the competent authorities multiple times due to complaints about dust and odor.

A company official acknowledged negligence in management and stated plans to establish fundamental measures to prevent recurrence of the same violations.

If facilities to suppress fugitive dust emissions are not installed or measures are not taken as identified in this planned crackdown, a fine of up to 3 million KRW may be imposed.

A representative of the Provincial Special Judicial Police analyzed that the reason for committing illegal acts despite the severity of punishment is the lack of awareness among business owners about the importance of fugitive dust management.

They added, "Recently, fine dust is causing significant harm to our daily lives, and warnings and alerts due to high concentrations of fine dust are being issued, so this is a time when special management is necessary," and stated, "We will continue to carry out planned crackdowns to create a pleasant air environment free from fine dust concerns."
