[Asia Economy (Sejong) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Sejong City is introducing a system that awards additional points in department performance management when city officials complete Korean language and Hangul education.
According to the city on the 15th, this system is introduced and implemented as part of the city’s ‘2021 Basic Plan for Creating a Hangul-Loving City,’ aiming to improve public language by having the public sector take the lead.
Additional points are granted differentially based on the proportion of those who completed at least 4 hours of education annually among the department’s personnel quota.
Through this, the city plans to first improve the use of public language centered on its officials and later create an opportunity to increase interest and participation in Hangul in the private sector as well.
Previously, the city established a dedicated Hangul promotion department at City Hall, the first among metropolitan cities nationwide and medium-sized cities. In particular, it is conducting projects such as operating a ‘Hangul-Loving Club,’ where citizens directly collect examples of beautiful Korean language signboards and engage in Hangul promotional activities.
Lee Chun-hee, Mayor of Sejong City, said, “I hope the public sector’s leading example will become a stepping stone to encourage the use of our language within the region,” and added, “We ask for citizens’ interest and participation in making Sejong a Hangul-loving city.”
