[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-ju] A man who severely beat an elementary school student, causing a concussion, after the child asked him to wear a mask properly during a conversation, was sentenced to a suspended prison term.

According to the court on the 14th, the Daejeon District Court sentenced Mr. A, who was indicted on charges of injury and violation of the Child Welfare Act (child abuse), to six months in prison with a two-year suspension. He was also ordered to complete a 40-hour child abuse treatment program.

Mr. A (39) confronted B (11), who was at an apartment playground in Jung-gu, Daejeon, on the evening of October 17 last year, after hearing that his own child had been "hit by B."

B told him, "Please wear your mask properly when talking," and enraged, Mr. A grabbed B, threw him down, and severely assaulted him. Mr. A also grabbed the head and body of another elementary student, C (12), who was nearby, and slammed him onto the ground with his hands.

B reportedly suffered a concussion and other injuries, while C sustained serious injuries requiring six weeks of treatment.

The court stated, "The defendant, an adult male, assaulted victims who were only elementary school students, which shows the severity of the crime," and added, "Considering that the legal representatives of the victims have reached an agreement and do not wish for Mr. A to be punished, this was taken into account in sentencing."
