Narrow Commute Path and Poor Pavement Between Eungbong Shindonga Apartment and Eungbong Hyundai Apartment Repaired... Seoul City Budget of Over 400 Million Won (Including Book Purchase) Supported Eungbong Elementary School Library Installation Construction Completion Site Visit
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seoul Metropolitan Council member Jeong Ji-gwon (Democratic Party, Seongdong 2) visited the site of the school route improvement project at Eungbong Elementary School, which was supported by the Seoul city budget, on the 13th. He discussed the direction of the school route improvement construction with related staff from Seongdong District Office, Eungbong Elementary School (Principal Park Kyung-nam) faculty, and parents.
He then visited the nearly completed library installation site at Eungbong Elementary School and listened to the difficulties faced by the faculty and parents.
This year’s school route improvement section is the alley between Eungbong Sindonga Apartments and Eungbong Hyundai Apartments (Doseodang-ro 59-gil), where the road is very narrow and a school route about 1.2 meters wide was installed. This has been a site where school officials and parents have continuously requested improvements every year.
The current school route has been supplemented with budget support from Seongdong District Office until last year, but this year, comprehensive improvements such as floor repair and safety equipment reinforcement were required. Since it was difficult to secure the budget with only the district office’s support, a request for support was made to Council member Jeong, who secured the budget through consultation with Seoul city, enabling the school route improvement construction.
He then visited the library at Eungbong Elementary School, which is nearing completion. The library was a space desired by the school faculty, parents, and students alike, but since the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education did not provide budget support, the project had remained only a plan each time. However, through Council member Jeong’s active efforts, a budget of 350 million KRW was secured in 2020 for the library installation, and construction is underway with an opening scheduled for May this year.
There was another difficulty for the school and parents. Although the library was prepared, securing books was a problem. Understanding the difficult situation, Council member Jeong negotiated with Seoul city to receive about 50 million KRW as a city grant for book purchases.
Regarding the improvement of children’s school routes, Council member Jeong said, “I did not realize the conditions were this poor until I visited the site,” and added, “I will strive to review and secure budgets to make children’s school routes safer.” He also toured the library installation site and classrooms at Eungbong Elementary School and promised, “I will spare no effort to actively support the improvement of the educational environment.”
