Biden Nominates Korean-American Elliott Kang as Deputy Secretary of State

[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] The White House announced on the 12th (local time) that U.S. President Joe Biden plans to nominate Korean-American C. S. Elliott Kang (59) as Assistant Secretary of State for International Security and Nonproliferation.


Kang, the nominee, is currently serving as the Acting Assistant Secretary of State for International Security and Nonproliferation and has also been handling the duties of the Assistant Secretary for Arms Control and International Security since January. This is the second time a Korean-American has been nominated for an assistant secretary-level position since the Biden administration began.


Kang earned his Ph.D. from Yale University and has served as a professor of international security at the University of Pennsylvania and Northern Illinois University. Since 2005, he has played a key role in the State Department's Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation.
