[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seongbuk-gu (Mayor Lee Seung-ro) held the "2021 13th Seongbuk-gu Youth Participation Committee and Child Rights Guardians Appointment Ceremony" on the 10th to guarantee the active participation rights of youth.

This year marks the 13th term of the Youth Participation Committee, and a total of 24 members were appointed this time.

Although there were difficulties in forming the committee due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, the appointment ceremony was conducted more meaningfully than ever thanks to the support of many young people.

In particular, the 13th Youth Participation Committee was composed of out-of-school youth, youth who immigrated mid-term, and in-school youth, allowing participation from diverse youth sectors.

On the day of the appointment ceremony, Seongbuk-gu Mayor Lee Seung-ro personally presented appointment letters and membership certificates to all members. After the presentation, a pledge to actively participate as committee members was read aloud, and the first part concluded with the mayor’s encouragement speech.

After indoor ventilation and quarantine measures, the second part provided a communication session to build relationships and increase intimacy among participating youth, easing the awkward atmosphere and sharing the schedule of the Youth Participation Committee.

The Seongbuk-gu Youth Participation Committee and Child Rights Guardians have been operating for 13 years in accordance with Article 5-2 of the Youth Basic Act and Article 12 of the Seongbuk-gu Ordinance on Creating a Child-Friendly City. This year, they plan to promote substantial participation rights and child rights enhancement through activities such as the child and youth participatory budgeting system, open forums, and child and youth rights monitoring groups.

Mayor Lee Seung-ro stated, “As youth suffrage expands and there is a growing effort to actively reflect youth opinions in policies, the activities of the Youth Participation Committee are becoming increasingly important. It is especially meaningful to hold the appointment ceremony marking the beginning of activities for the 24 youth representatives who applied to actively participate in our district administration despite the ongoing difficulties caused by COVID-19.”
