Seodaemun 50 Plus Center Opens 14 New Online Courses... Various Classes Including Virtual Hiking, Household Sewing, and Seasonal Cooking Classes Available
[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Seodaemun-gu (Mayor Moon Seok-jin) announced that the Seodaemun 50 Plus Center (484 Tongil-ro) will consecutively open 14 online education programs for the 50s and 60s age group in the first half of this year starting from the 19th.
First, Choi Oh-soon, a full-time instructor at the Korea Mountaineering Education Center, will conduct the "Online Mountaineering Class - Smart Mountaineering Techniques Suitable for Your Body" (4/19?5/10 every Monday).
Instructor Choi is a professional mountaineer who was part of the first all-female Korean Everest expedition team in 1993 and reached the world's highest peak.
The newly established courses this time include "50+ Household Sewing - Summer Indoor Clothes Made by Hand Sewing" (4/21?4/30 every Wednesday and Friday) and "Hobby for 50+," with all practice materials provided.
In particular, those who take the "Hobby for 50+" course will receive a "DIY Hobby Kit" created by the Seodaemun 50 Plus Center Social Contribution Group hobby instructors and will make items such as a red bean pouch heating pack (5/21), a metal relief clock (5/28), and a handmade notebook (6/4) themselves.
For 50+ beginner cooks, "Im Kyung-ho's Seasonal Cooking Class" offers lessons on making chwinamul pesto and chwinamul porridge (5/13), pea rice and zucchini soybean paste soup (6/10), and basil pesto and salad pasta (7/8).
Special lectures on climate and environment include Professor Jo Hyo-je of Sungkonghoe University’s "COVID-19 and Climate Crisis Through the Eyes of Human Rights" (5/20) and Yang Rae-gyo, CEO of Almang Store, with "Discard the Shell, Only the Core Comes - Learn at Almang Store" (6/24).
Indian and Nepalese music performer Kim Byung-je will give a lecture titled "My New Taste, First Steps in Appreciating Indian Music" (5/11?6/1 every Tuesday), and Dr. Ryu Hyun-jung will lecture on "The Worldview of Indian Mythology" (6/8?6/29 every Tuesday).
Additionally, psychiatrist Moon Yo-han, author of "Otium, My Own Rest That Gives Strength to Live," will lecture on "After Fifty, Find Your Own Otium" (5/27), and psychoanalytic counselor Park Woo-ran, author of "Daughters Grow Up Eating Their Mothers' Emotions," will speak on "Living as Myself Beyond Parents" (6/30).
All programs will be conducted via live broadcast on the Seodaemun 50 Plus Center YouTube channel or through video conferencing programs.
Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis through the center’s website, and access links will be sent via text message to participants before the start of each lecture.
Lectures are free of charge, while other programs have fees ranging from 5,000 to 20,000 KRW.
Moon Seok-jin, Mayor of Seodaemun-gu, said, "We expect many interests and participation from the 50+ generation preparing for the second half of life in these courses that offer beneficial content while maintaining social distancing."
Since opening in spring 2018, the Seodaemun 50 Plus Center has been actively conducting various educational programs for changing perceptions and life planning of the 50+ generation, as well as support activities for seeking new jobs.
