[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Jinju City, Gyeongnam Province announced on the 13th that it has signed a business agreement with six related organizations to create a Child Friendly City that guarantees the basic rights of children and makes a world where children are happy.

The agreement involves the Jinju City Council, Jinju Police Station, Jinju Office of Education, Jinju Fire Station, Gyeongnam Western Child Protection Agency, and Good Neighbors Yeongnam Regional Headquarters.

To prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), the six organizations individually visited and jointly signed the agreement in a non-face-to-face written agreement, joining hands to create a Child Friendly City.

This agreement was prepared to establish a foundation for creating a Child Friendly City, build a public-private network to realize the Child Rights Convention, and jointly carry out child rights advocacy projects for the rights to survival, protection, development, and participation as stipulated in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

According to the agreement, the city and related organizations will promote various projects to establish a system where children are respected as members of society through mutual cooperation.

In addition, they will take on roles to support the implementation of necessary matters for creating a Child Friendly City from their respective positions, including practicing the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, securing a child-friendly budget, child rights education and promotion, creating a safe environment for child safety and life protection, and preventing child abuse.

Joo Kyu-il, mayor of Jinju City, said, “Through this agreement, Jinju City and six related organizations will establish a cooperative system to make Jinju a UNICEF Child Friendly City where children can enjoy sufficient rights and live happy lives. We will do our best,” and added, “We expect this agreement to be very helpful in creating a Child Friendly City.”

Meanwhile, a UNICEF Child Friendly City is a local government with a child-friendly environment that fully realizes the rights of children contained in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and enables children to live better lives, certified through an evaluation by the UNICEF Korea Committee.
