Seocho-gu Singles Walking Together in Spring! 'Oh! Single Day' Event Held

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Recently, with the strengthening of social distancing measures due to COVID-19 and the prolonged remote work and home-stay lifestyle of single-person households, the sense of isolation among single-person households has grown more than ever.

To support these easily isolated single-person households, the Seocho Single-Person Household Support Center will hold a ‘Single Day’ event for single-person households on the 14th from 4 PM to 8 PM at Twosome Place Seocho-gu Office Branch (7 Seoun-ro).

The Seocho Single-Person Household Support Center is a welfare institution established by Seocho-gu, the first local government in the country, to provide safety, care, and convenience services for single-person households.

The district took inspiration from Black Day on April 14, which originated from the idea that people without partners live as bitterly as black bean noodles (jajangmyeon). The event was planned with the purpose of supporting the lives of Seocho’s single-person households on a day dedicated to singles.

The event will be operated in a walking-through format in accordance with quarantine guidelines. Participants can visit freely at their preferred time on the day, and upon entering the cafe, they can explore the promotional zone and experience zone guided by the staff.

In particular, the experience zone offers psychological counseling and drawing tests by experts for single-person households suffering from anxiety and depression, diffuser-making for mood refreshment indoors during the home-stay period, and book curation by an independent bookstore for single-person households.

Additionally, single-person meal kits (pasta, dried pollack hangover soup) made with fresh ingredients for easy and delicious meals will be provided.

Moreover, the event has another purpose. The center plans to actively promote the event so that single-person households in Seocho can enjoy various benefits from care to convenience services through the center, aiming to receive more applications.

With many applications, various concept Single Days will be held continuously throughout the year. Participation applications can be made through the Seocho Single-Person Household Support Center website.

Any single-person household residing in Seocho-gu can participate.

The district and the center are preparing various programs for single-person households. Among them, the most prominent recently is content provided to single-person households through on-tact YouTube.

Starting last November, young single-person households will take on a challenge to visit about 70 ‘Honsikdang’ (restaurants suitable for solo dining) one by one according to the difficulty of solo dining.

Unlike solo dining where one might feel embarrassed and lower their head due to others’ gaze, at Seocho’s Honsikdang, one can comfortably enjoy a hearty meal ranging from snacks to barbecue restaurants.

The Honsikdang challenge eating broadcasts will be posted as a series on the YouTube channel ‘Seocho Single Talk’ starting in April.

Also, just as eating alone often reminds one of warm home-cooked meals made by mom, the center operates ‘Mom’s Meal Day’ for young single-person households who miss mom’s cooking. This program invites young singles to participate with a cooking instructor to challenge making home meals, with applications accepted on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month, offering various menus.

Videos providing cooking tips for solo dining beginners, weekly recommended meal plans, cooking methods, and nutrition information will be produced and posted on the YouTube channel ‘Seocho Single Talk’.

Lastly, in collaboration with the Seocho Korean Medicine Association (President Hwang Manki), which has expertise in health and medicine, a health doctor broadcast for single-person households will be provided on YouTube.

The main content focuses on precautions and prevention methods for diseases that single-person households may frequently experience, emphasizing lifestyle improvements for prevention rather than treatment.

Also, to make it easier for the main viewers, single-person households, to understand, difficult medical terms are avoided as much as possible, and real-time communication via ‘ZOOM’ is maintained. To promote interactive communication, Korean medicine doctors respond to comments left by subscribers and viewers, and gifts are provided through a lottery.

The Seocho-originated single-person household support, which has spread nationwide, is evolving beyond simple support.

Seocho-gu Mayor Cho Eun-hee said, “In April, we have worked hard to prepare various policies to accompany the increasing number of single-person households,” adding, “We will not stop at caring for the health of single-person households but will prepare various policies and content that single-person households can trust and rely on.”
