[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Public officials at Nam-gu Office in Gwangju Metropolitan City have attracted attention by donating the reward money received from the government last year for welfare project achievements to ensure the safety of disaster-vulnerable groups such as people with disabilities.
According to Nam-gu on the 12th, public officials in charge of disability welfare at the District Office’s Disability Welfare Division and 16 neighborhood offices purchased gas safety shut-off devices with the reward money of 9 million KRW received for ranking first nationwide in the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s “2020 Disability Welfare Evaluation” last year, and decided to distribute them to households vulnerable to disasters.
The gas safety shut-off devices distributed to households vulnerable to disasters, such as the visually impaired, are voice-supported devices that automatically shut off gas and provide warning alerts in case of gas leaks.
They also have a function to notify in advance when it is time to replace the batteries.
A total of 112 households will have the gas safety shut-off devices installed this time.
These households were recommended as priority support targets by the 16 neighborhood administrative welfare centers, with installation starting in households of people with severe visual impairments.
The installation of the gas safety shut-off devices is scheduled to be carried out through visits to each household from this month until June.
In addition, Nam-gu plans to work with the Southern Fire Station to install additional fire alarms in households where gas safety shut-off devices are installed or replace old fire alarms that are already installed.
A Nam-gu official said, “All employees willingly donated the reward money given by the government as a morale booster and encouragement for the safety of disaster-vulnerable groups, enabling the installation and distribution of gas safety shut-off devices,” and added, “We will continue to work harder to show our commitment to a happy welfare Nam-gu.”
