[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Soyoung] Former People Power Party Supreme Council member Lee Jun-seok described the youth sentiment that shifted to the Democratic Party in the April 7 by-election results as "the result of focusing solely on the feminist movement," prompting former Dongyang University professor Jin Joong-kwon to rebut him, leading to ongoing heated exchanges.

This confrontation began with a post Lee made on his Facebook on the 9th. Regarding the election, he analyzed, "The Democratic Party underestimated the voting power of men in their 20s and 30s and focused solely on the feminist movement, which led to this outcome."

He added, "People like Yoo Si-min absurdly claimed that men are disadvantaged compared to women because they watch soccer and play League of Legends instead of studying. Feminists made statements unsatisfactory to feminists in the face of Mayor Park Won-soon's sexual misconduct scandal, and when the victim's story was told, feminist votes fled, causing 15% of the 20s female vote to be taken by minor candidates," he argued.

He continued, "Unless the distorted gender division called gender equality is stopped, the Democratic Party will never get votes from men in their 20s. Not even if you give them 100,000 won, not even if you give them a 40% subway fare discount, not even if you give them 5GB of data," he said.

In response, former professor Jin replied in the comments, "That's very bad populism," to which Lee responded, "That's because the perception of gender equality differs between those over 50 and those in their 20s and 30s."

Jin then warned, "I think you're greatly mistaken, but keep going like that. I'll make you plummet in an instant with just one word," he cautioned.

Their second exchange continued in a post Lee made on the 11th. Lee said, "Vegetarians don't care about their own vegetarianism, but when they portray themselves as trendy people who care about climate change and depict those who don't as uncivilized and outdated fools, that's when fights start. This kind of trendiness is exhausting. One day you have to eat insects, the next day vegetables," he said.

He added, "Similarly, feminists can do what they want. If you don't want to wear makeup, don't. If you want to stop coloring your hair, do it. The moment it's portrayed as trendy and not doing it is reactionary, fights break out," he argued.

He also pointed out, "'The Feminist Declaration' people have shown through Mayor Park Won-soon's sexual misconduct scandal that there is no moral reason to respect them more than 'Han-nam' (a derogatory term for Korean men) just because of that declaration," and criticized, "When there is originally nothing substantial, people gain a sense of belonging from a single term and mistakenly believe they are superior just because of that term."

In response, former professor Jin commented, "You should make friends, not enemies. You keep trying to do populism that uses hatred or resentment. What are you going to do by turning everyone into enemies?"

Lee rebutted, "I don't use resentment. I'm just at a mild interventionist stance," he said.
