[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Dobong-gu (Mayor Lee Dong-jin) has been selected for the "2021 District-Specific Project for Fine Dust Reduction" hosted by Seoul City.
The fine dust specialized project is a region-customized fine dust reduction initiative considering the characteristics of each district. Dobong-gu applied and was selected under the theme "DOMINO" (Dobong-gu Fine Dust NO), receiving a city subsidy of 60 million KRW.
"DOMINO" is a fine dust specialized project implemented by Dobong-gu since 2020. It is a representative project for fine dust reduction in Dobong-gu, including indoor wall greening for managing indoor air quality in daycare centers where indoor activities increased due to COVID-19, and installing fine dust traffic lights in multi-use facilities.
Especially this year, a customized fine dust reduction project will be carried out for facilities used by vulnerable groups such as welfare centers, senior centers, and daycare centers.
In daycare centers, indoor wall greening will be created to reduce fine dust and aid children's psychological development. For senior facilities, a window-attached ventilation system with built-in filters will be installed to enable safe ventilation even on days with high fine dust levels.
Additionally, the district expects synergy effects by promoting customized fine dust environmental education for each social class in connection with the "Cooperative DOMINO" project, a public-private governance initiative started last year, alongside this specialized project.
Dobong-gu was the first basic local government nationwide to install a fine dust display facility at the Dobong-gu Office building in 2017, informing residents of fine dust concentration through colors (red for very bad, orange for bad, green for moderate, blue for good). It has installed indoor and outdoor fine dust traffic lights or created indoor wall greening at 151 daycare centers and multi-use facilities, and was selected as the first "Good Air City" by Seoul City in 2019.
Mayor Lee Dong-jin of Dobong-gu stated, "Along with COVID-19, fine dust is threatening the health of our residents. We will continuously promote life-centered reduction projects to ensure that Dobong becomes a 'Good Air City' where residents can breathe safely without any shortcomings."
