Warning Over Escalation of US-China Military Conflict in the Taiwan Strait
[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] Tony Blinken, U.S. Secretary of State, warned that China is taking increasingly aggressive actions toward Taiwan, and anyone attempting to change the current situation in the Western Pacific by force would be making a serious mistake.
This statement came amid escalating tensions, such as when a U.S. warship recently sailed through the Taiwan Strait and China dispatched air force jets.
In an interview with NBC on the 11th (local time), Secretary Blinken said, "What we have seen, what we are truly concerned about, is the Chinese government's increasingly aggressive behavior toward Taiwan," adding that this is raising tensions in the Taiwan Strait.
He emphasized that the U.S. has a long-standing commitment under the Taiwan Relations Act to ensure that Taiwan has the capability to defend itself and maintain peace and security in the Western Pacific.
However, Secretary Blinken avoided directly addressing whether the U.S. would respond militarily to China's actions in Taiwan.
He said, "What I can say is that we have a serious commitment to Taiwan being able to defend itself," and added, "We support that commitment."
