28 Millionaires with Stocks Over 10 Billion Won...700 Are Ordinary Individual Investors [Image source=Yonhap News]


[Asia Economy Reporter Ji-hwan Park] It has been revealed that there are 2,800 "super-rich" individuals holding more than 10 billion KRW worth of domestic stocks. Among them, about 700 are counted as ordinary individual investors.


According to the Korea Securities Depository on the 11th, as of the end of last year, the total number of shareholders holding stocks valued over 10 billion KRW reached 2,800. This is an increase of 600 people (27.0%) compared to 2,200 in 2019.


The total value of stocks they held increased by 59.9 trillion KRW (33.0%), from 181.6 trillion KRW at the end of 2019 to 241.5 trillion KRW at the end of last year. The average holding per person also rose by 4.5%, from 82.5 billion KRW to 86.2 billion KRW.


The super-rich accounted for 0.03% of the total 9.19 million individual investors. However, the scale of stocks they held accounted for 36.5% of the total individual stock holdings of 662 trillion KRW.


Three out of four super-rich individuals were composed of the largest shareholders of listed companies or their special related parties such as relatives. According to FnGuide, as of the end of last year, there were 2,100 largest shareholders and special related parties holding stocks worth over 10 billion KRW. This is an increase of 400 people compared to 1,700 in 2019.


Excluding the largest shareholders of listed companies and others, the number of ordinary individual investors holding stocks worth over 10 billion KRW was 700. At the end of 2019, there were 500, but last year it increased by 200.


Among those holding stocks worth over 10 billion KRW, the oldest was estimated to be 100 years old. Lee Jong-gwan (born 1922), a relative of the largest shareholder of Celltrion, is known to hold Celltrion stocks worth 19.2 billion KRW.


The youngest is Jung Mo (born 2013), granddaughter of Jung Ji-wan, chairman of semiconductor materials company Soulbrain Holdings. Jung is 9 years old this year, and the value of her Soulbrain stocks held was estimated at 58.2 billion KRW.
