"Save the Earth" Food Industry Strengthens Eco-Friendly Activities

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-seon] The food industry is stepping up its eco-friendly activities. Companies are conducting campaigns that enable eco-friendly consumption, while consumers are paying attention to whether product consumption leads to environmental sustainability.

On the 11th, according to related industries, Domino's Pizza announced that it will carry out the 'Eco-Life Campaign' to create a sustainable environment by giving away insulated bags that can be used for pizza delivery and multipurpose use.

Domino's Pizza will hold a lottery for 2,000 people who order takeout pizza at least twice by the 29th, giving away two-way insulated bags that can be used for pizza delivery and multipurpose purposes, along with two 50% discount coupons for takeout.

In addition, Domino's Pizza is conducting a campaign to prevent food waste and reduce the use of disposable products by not providing pickles, sauces, and disposable forks to customers who do not need them when ordering pizza. When ordering online, customers can directly choose whether to receive pickles, sauces, and disposable forks.

E-Land Eats buffet brand Ashley is conducting the 'Clean Dish Campaign' with the E-Land Foundation for eco-friendly management. The Clean Dish Campaign is a sharing campaign that combines environmental friendliness and social contribution by donating 100 KRW per person from E-Land Eats and the E-Land Foundation to families at risk of food insecurity when customers dine at Ashley without leaving food behind.

Customers can participate in the Clean Dish Campaign simply by flipping over the round mat provided on the table at the participating store and finishing their meal without leaving leftovers. Participating customers receive a 100% winning scratch coupon with prizes such as a one-year meal voucher at Ashley.

This movement to reduce leftovers started from the idea of protecting the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption through decreasing food waste.

CJ CheilJedang announced that it applied transparent vinyl made from naturally decomposable materials to bundled products of 'Happy Bean Tofu.' By replacing existing petrochemical packaging materials with eco-friendly materials, it is expected to reduce plastic usage by about 50 tons annually.

CJ CheilJedang created a qualitatively improved biodegradable vinyl by utilizing the characteristics of PHA and PLA. While PLA has high strength but lacks flexibility, PHA, which has rubber-like properties, was mixed to make it soft yet resistant to tearing. Attention was also paid to maintaining the transparency of the vinyl so that product freshness can be visually confirmed.
