[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Brian Kemp, Governor of the U.S. state of Georgia, urged President Joe Biden to exercise his 'veto power' regarding the final ruling of the International Trade Commission (ITC). This appeal is based on the judgment that if the import ban on SK Innovation's batteries is not overturned, it could severely impact the long-term prospects of electric vehicle battery production facilities.
On the 8th (local time), Governor Brian Kemp stated in a press release, "The President is about to make another decision that could either secure or derail a $2.6 billion investment in Georgia," adding, "At least 2,600 jobs in Georgia depend on President Biden's ITC ruling."
He continued, "I sincerely hope the President exercises his authority to do the right thing," urging the exercise of veto power. This is the third time Governor Kemp has called on the President to use his veto power.
On February 10, the U.S. ITC recognized SK Innovation's trade secret infringement in the final decision regarding the trade secret dispute between LG Energy Solution and SK Innovation, issuing a 10-year import ban order against SK.
If the two companies reach an agreement, the legal dispute will be resolved, but it is reported that differences over the compensation amount have yet to be narrowed. If the President exercises his 'veto power,' the ITC sanctions will be nullified. The deadline for President Biden to exercise veto power over the ITC decision is the 11th of this month (local time).
