Appointment of Heads for Four Research Institutes: Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute, Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine, Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology, and Korea Railroad Research Institute

National Research Council of Science and Technology, Appointment Ceremony on the 9th

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-su] The National Science and Technology Research Council (NST) will appoint new presidents for four research institutes on the 9th: Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI), Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine (KIOM), Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT), and Korea Railroad Research Institute (KRRI).


The council held the 149th extraordinary board meeting at the Korea Science and Technology Center the day before and confirmed the appointments of the heads of these four research institutes. Park Young-deuk, a senior researcher at KASI, was promoted and appointed as the president of KASI. Lee Jin-yong, an external figure and professor at Kyung Hee University College of Korean Medicine, was appointed as the president of KIOM. Kim Byung-seok, a senior research fellow, was appointed as the president of KICT, and Han Seok-yoon, a principal researcher, was appointed as the president of KRRI, both through internal promotions. Their terms are three years. On the same day, NST Chairperson Im Hye-sook is scheduled to present appointment letters to the new presidents of the four institutes at the Korea Science and Technology Center.


Park Young-deuk, the new president of KASI, graduated from Kyungpook National University with a degree in Science Education in 1978 and earned his master's (1984) and doctoral (1994) degrees in Astronomy from Seoul National University. Since 1990, he has worked at KASI, serving as head of the Senior Research Division, Senior Research Department, and Space Science Research Department.


Lee Jin-yong, the new president of KIOM, graduated from Kyung Hee University College of Korean Medicine in 1988 and earned his master's (1990) and doctoral (1993) degrees in Korean Medicine from the same university's graduate school. Since 1991, he has been a professor at Kyung Hee University College of Korean Medicine, serving as vice director of the Planning and Medical Department and director of the Planning Coordination Office at the Korean Medicine Hospital, and currently serves as the hospital director.


Kim Byung-seok, the new president of KICT, graduated from Seoul National University with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1982 and earned his master's (1984) and doctoral (1992) degrees in Civil Engineering from the same university's graduate school. Since 1984, he has worked at KICT, serving as head of the Senior Research Division, Infrastructure Research Division, director of the SOC Performance Research Institute, and director of the Planning and Coordination Office.


Han Seok-yoon, the new president of KRRI, graduated from Pusan National University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1983, earned his master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Yonsei University (1990), and his doctoral degree in Industrial Engineering from Sungkyunkwan University (2006). Since 1996, he has worked at KRRI, serving as head of the Senior Research Department (vice president), leader of the Urban Railroad Standardization Research Group, and director of the Urban Railroad Technology Development Project Group.
