‘Muan~Jeju’ Air Route Resumes from the 29th

[Muan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeonnam Province announced that it will resume the Muan-Jeju route at Muan International Airport, which had been completely suspended since November 30 last year due to the impact of COVID-19, starting from the 29th.

Jeju Air, a domestic low-cost carrier (LCC), will initially operate the Muan-Jeju route irregularly with four flights per week (Friday to Monday), and will consider converting to regular flights and increasing the number of flights depending on passenger demand.

Muan International Airport recorded 900,000 passengers in 2019, showing a 68% increase from the previous year, ranking first nationwide and establishing its status as a hub airport in the southwestern region.

However, due to the sharp decline in demand caused by the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, all flights were suspended from November last year.

The province made every effort to resume operations at Muan International Airport in cooperation with related organizations such as Muan County, Korea Airports Corporation, Jeju Air, and the Muan Airport Revitalization Committee.

Going forward, Jeju Air and the province plan to jointly promote tourism in Jeonnam and support the resumption of operations at Muan International Airport by holding a “Namdo Travel Treasure Hunt and Muan International Airport Revitalization” contest in May.

It is expected to help raise public interest and revitalize the airport.

Park Cheolwon, head of the Road Traffic Division of Jeonnam Province, said, “We are doing our best to revitalize domestic routes first, and are thoroughly preparing by expanding infrastructure and convenience facilities in preparation for the resumption of international flights after overcoming COVID-19.” He added, “We will also strive to revitalize Muan International Airport by requesting the redistribution of cargo flights concentrated at Incheon Airport to Muan Airport, a hub airport in the southwestern region.”
