Jeonnam Province City and Provincial Council By-elections... Democratic Party Victory in Suncheon, Goheung, and Boseong

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] The Democratic Party of Korea won all the by-elections for city and provincial councilors in Jeollanam-do.

In the Jeollanam-do Provincial Council by-election for Suncheon City District 1 (Songgwang, Oeseo, Nagan, Sangsa, Byeollyang-myeon, Pungdeok, Namje, Jeojeon, Jangcheon, Dosadong), Democratic Party candidate Han Chun-ok won 8,055 votes out of 12,597 votes cast, defeating independent candidate Joo Yoon-sik who received 4,377 votes, and was elected as a Jeollanam-do councilor.

This by-election recorded a notably low voter turnout of 26.3%, with 12,597 voters casting ballots out of a total electorate of 47,888, compared to other regions.

In the Jeollanam-do Provincial Council by-election for Goheung County District 2 (Doyang-eup, Pungyang, Dodeok, Geumsan, Dohwa, Podu, Bongrae, Dongil-myeon), Democratic Party candidate Park Seon-jun won with 9,045 votes, defeating independent candidate Jeong Sun-yeol who received 7,912 votes by a margin of 1,133 votes.

The Goheung County by-election recorded a voter turnout of 55.7%, with 17,141 voters casting ballots out of 30,771 eligible voters.

Meanwhile, in the Boseong County District 2 (Gyeombaek, Yul-eo, Boknae, Mundeok, Joseong-myeon) county council by-election, Democratic Party candidate Jo Young-nam narrowly won by 5 votes over independent candidate Yoon Jeong-jae.

The Boseong County by-election recorded a voter turnout of 61.4%, with 4,962 voters casting ballots out of 8,076 eligible voters. The vote counts were Democratic Party candidate Jo Young-nam with 2,209 votes, independent candidate Yoon Jeong-jae with 2,204 votes, and independent candidate Kim Mi-yeol with 482 votes.

Although the Democratic Party won all the by-elections in Jeollanam-do, a stronghold of the party, there is analysis that the aftermath of this election, which reflects local public sentiment, will not be insignificant. Attention is focused on Kim Seung-nam, chairman of the Democratic Party's Jeollanam-do Provincial Committee, and So Byung-chul, chairman of the Suncheon regional committee.
