Hyosung's Eco-Friendly Fiber 'Regen' Now Saves the Ocean

Hyosung TNC, Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority, and Pleats Mama Sign Business Agreement for 'Regen Project'

Hyosung's Eco-Friendly Fiber 'Regen' Now Saves the Ocean

[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Hyosung TNC is launching a project to save the ocean using Re:gen, a leading eco-friendly fiber in Korea.

Hyosung TNC signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the 8th to promote the 'Re:gen Ocean' project, which recycles transparent PET bottles from ships entering and leaving ports, together with Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority and the eco-friendly fashion brand Pleats Mama.

This project was planned to prevent marine pollution caused by PET bottles used on ships during navigation.

Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority provides collection bags to separate and dispose of PET bottles used on departing ships and collects them from returning ships. Hyosung TNC recycles the collected PET bottles into polyester fiber called 'Re:gen Ocean.' Pleats Mama uses this fiber to make fashion products such as clothes and bags.

Meanwhile, Hyosung TNC is also pursuing OBP (Ocean Bound Plastic) certification from Control Union, a Dutch eco-friendly certification body, to prove that the plastic was collected from the ocean. As global brands have recently shown increasing interest in OBP, Hyosung TNC is expected to be the first in Korea to receive this certification.

Since last year, Hyosung TNC has collaborated with Jeju Island, Seoul City, and others to create eco-friendly bags and clothing using recycled fiber Re:gen, gaining tremendous popularity among consumers. Going forward, the company plans to continuously expand the eco-friendly market by cooperating with local governments nationwide.

Hyosung Chairman Cho Hyun-joon stated, "Hyosung has been promoting various businesses that can help the environment, led by Re:gen. We will continue to practice sustainable management through various attempts and business initiatives to establish a resource circulation system."
