Gyeongbuk Province Unveils 'Korean New Deal' Model … Major Forum by Presidential Policy Planning Committee

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Jae-ho] The 'Gyeongbuk-type New Deal' (3+1) comprehensive plan is expected to gain even more momentum with the government's attention.

The Presidential Committee on Policy Planning (Chairman Cho Dae-yeop) will hold the 'Korean New Deal Listening and Empathy Daegu-Gyeongbuk Grand Debate' at 1:30 PM on the 8th at the Gyeongbuk Provincial Office, attended by Governor Lee Cheol-woo, Daegu Mayor Kwon Young-jin, local lawmakers, the Saemaul Undong Central Association, and various other figures.

The debate will be held over two days until the 9th under the theme "Korean New Deal, Finding the Way in the Region!" with subtopics including 'Saemaul Undong,' 'Hydrogen Economy,' and 'Social Dialogue.'

The Gyeongbuk-type New Deal (3+1) comprehensive plan is a proactive response prepared by Gyeongbuk following the government's announcement of the Korean New Deal plan in July. It is a mega project involving a total of 164 tasks and a budget of 12.4 trillion KRW, combining Digital New Deal, Green New Deal, safety net reinforcement, and the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Integrated New Airport.

Among these projects, Gyeongbuk Province is particularly promoting the 'Top 10 Priority Tasks,' including ▲Establishment of a hydrogen fuel cell power generation cluster ▲Development of high-performance secondary battery technology ▲Creation of a 5G-based convergence industry cluster and accelerator data utilization open infrastructure ▲Formation of a renewable energy industry convergence complex.

The Daegu-Gyeongbuk Integrated New Airport, which alone involves an investment of 10 trillion KRW in construction, is expected to integrate advanced digital and green technologies and have a tremendous impact on local employment, making it a flagship project of the Korean New Deal to revive the national and regional economy after COVID-19.

Among the core projects that Gyeongbuk is focusing on, the hydrogen fuel cell power generation cluster project is attracting attention as a Green New Deal project with a total budget of 106.2 billion KRW (63.5 billion KRW national funds, 23.6 billion KRW local funds, 19.1 billion KRW private investment) to be invested from 2023 to 2027 on a 280,240㎡ site within the Pohang Blue Valley National Industrial Complex.

So far, the province has made significant efforts to foster the hydrogen industry base, including the completion of the Pohang TP Fuel Cell Certification Center (10 billion KRW), selection for the hydrogen industry convergence workforce training support project (4.3 billion KRW over 5 years), and the enactment of the ordinance on fostering and supporting the hydrogen and fuel cell industry (July 2020).

Additionally, the high-performance next-generation secondary battery commercialization technology development project plans to invest a total of 385 billion KRW (257 billion KRW national funds, 40.8 billion KRW local funds, 87.2 billion KRW private investment) from 2022 to 2028 on an 8,031㎡ site around the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory and Blue Valley Industrial Complex. In this regard, Gyeongbuk Province plans to apply for the 2nd preliminary feasibility technical evaluation in May.

Governor Lee Cheol-woo emphasized, "We will take the lead in the new leap of the region and Korea through the construction of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Integrated New Airport, which will be a representative project of the Korean New Deal, along with over 160 tasks discovered focusing on the Digital and Green New Deals."
