[Asia Economy Reporter Kangwook Cho] Hyundai Engineering is actively advancing the development of an automated design system utilizing AI (artificial intelligence) technology in the construction engineering field.

Hyundai Engineering announced on the 8th that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for 'Cooperation in Developing Automated AI Design' with Bentley Systems.

Through this agreement, Hyundai Engineering and Bentley Systems will collaborate on technology development to build a system that automatically designs steel and concrete structures and optimizes them by incorporating artificial intelligence technology.

Last year, Hyundai Engineering became the first in the industry to develop an automated design system for plant steel structures using AI machine learning and completed domestic patent registration. Subsequently, to expand technology development and business application in the global market, it also filed patents in the United States and internationally. The automated design system for plant steel structures developed by Hyundai Engineering significantly reduces the time required for design compared to the manual input method by engineers, enhancing work efficiency and accuracy. Additionally, through AI machine learning, it can predict the optimal structural form and optimize construction quantities, thereby shortening construction periods and reducing design costs.

Bentley Systems, participating in this joint technology development, is a global software developer established in 1984, specializing in roads, bridges, airports, high-rise buildings, industrial and power plants, and utility networks. It provides various solutions necessary for the engineering field and is a global company with annual sales of $800 million across 172 countries as of 2020.

Both companies expect that by proactively applying AI technology to construction design through this technology development cooperation, they will achieve enhanced design quality, shortened design periods, and reduced project costs.

Building on the automated AI design system developed by Hyundai Engineering, Bentley Systems will further develop automated design technology using its structural design program STAAD and expand the application scope to steel structures supporting piping and reinforced concrete structures, thereby improving system performance. Based on this, they plan to extend the automated AI design system to all design fields.

Han Daehee, Executive Director and Head of the Engineering Center at Hyundai Engineering, said, "Following the development of the industry's first AI-based automated design system for plant steel structures, we expect to achieve even greater results in the field of design automation through collaboration with the global engineering software company Bentley Systems." He added, "We plan to build a digital platform through AI technology-based automated systems across all EPC areas, including design, procurement, construction, and operation."
