[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 8th that it held an opening ceremony for the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Convergence Research Center at Hanyang University ERICA Campus (Hanyang University ERICA).
The Hanyang University ERICA AI Convergence Research Center was selected in 2020 as part of the AI graduate school program. Its purpose is to cultivate master's and doctoral level convergence talents equipped with both basic and applied AI capabilities and expertise in other fields.
To this end, eight departments participate to establish three specialized tracks in bio, medical, and pharmaceutical fields, and have built an educational curriculum that progresses through basic, advanced, convergence, and practical AI courses.
Along with the AI degree program that selects about 50 students annually to train them as master's and doctoral candidates, a certification program (about 50 students) is operated where graduate students from seven participating departments who complete a certain level of AI coursework and meet requirements have their completion track specified on their graduation certificate.
Additionally, linked with various government support projects such as the Campus Innovation Park project, Small Giant R&D Special Zone, and University Industry-Academic Cooperation Complex projects, it is expected to serve as a hub for creating a virtuous cycle ecosystem connecting bio AI convergence research with startup and commercialization activities.
Kim Jeongsam, Software Policy Officer at the Ministry of Science and ICT, said, “Digital transformation through the integration of new software technologies is urgent to respond to the 4th Industrial Revolution, but there is currently a severe shortage of personnel with capabilities in AI and related fields. We expect the Hanyang University ERICA Convergence Research Center to cultivate core talents equipped with AI technology and practical skills, acting as a catalyst for digital transformation and innovative growth of bio-related companies in the Gyeonggi region.”
The AI graduate school program has been selected since 2019 to nurture top-tier talents in the AI field. Currently, eight AI graduate schools are operating including Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, Korea University, Sungkyunkwan University, Yonsei University, Ulsan Institute of Science and Technology, Pohang University of Science and Technology, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, and Hanyang University; and four AI Convergence Research Centers including Pusan National University, Inha University, Chungnam National University, and Hanyang University ERICA. Two additional AI graduate schools will be selected within this month.
