LA Sheriff's Office Confirms Speeding via Dashcam of Crash Vehicle
No Braking Attempt at Time of Accident
Crash Occurred While Driving at 82 mph on 45 mph Limit Road
[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] Investigation results revealed that the car rollover accident involving 'Golf Emperor' Tiger Woods was caused by excessive speeding on a curved road.
According to U.S. media, on the 7th (local time), the Los Angeles (LA) County Sheriff's Department in California announced at a press conference that the main cause of the rollover accident involving Woods' vehicle was his failure to navigate the curve due to speeding.
The Sheriff's Department determined that Woods was driving at over 80 miles per hour on a road with a speed limit of 45 miles per hour. The vehicle's black box recorded the speed as 84 to 87 miles per hour when the car crossed the center line, and 75 miles per hour at the time of collision with the opposite lane curb. The black box installed in the vehicle Woods was riding in was expected to provide evidence for the cause of the incident.
James Powers of the LA County Sheriff's Department stated that Woods was pressing the accelerator pedal instead of the brake at the time of the accident. He explained that there was no attempt to brake.
When asked whether Woods was conscious just before the collision, Powers replied, "It is unknown." Woods does not remember the circumstances of the accident.
The Sheriff's Department did not issue a summons to Woods nor charge him with 'reckless driving,' but emphasized that this was not a special favor.
The Wall Street Journal reported that although authorities presumed speeding as the cause of the accident, many questions remain, and that the authorities have not confirmed whether Woods was using his mobile phone.
On February 23rd at around 7 a.m., Woods was driving a Hyundai Genesis GV80 SUV on a downhill section in Rolling Hills Estates near LA when the vehicle rolled over.
He suffered severe leg injuries from the accident, underwent multiple surgeries, and is currently recovering at his home in Florida.
