[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] The POSCO TJ Park Foundation announced on the 7th that it held the 15th '2021 POSCO TJ Park Awards' ceremony at the POSCO Center.
At the ceremony, plaques and prize money of 200 million KRW each were awarded to Professor Baek Moo-hyun of the Department of Chemistry at KAIST for the Science Award, Yongnam Middle School in Sacheon for the Education Award, the nonprofit organization Child Welfare Practice Association Seum for the Volunteer Award, and CEO Jung Han of i3system Co., Ltd. for the Technology Award.
Kim Sun-wook, Chairman of the POSCO TJ Park Foundation, said in his welcoming remarks, "The POSCO TJ Park Foundation will continuously discover and support those who creatively and devotedly challenge the tasks facing humanity," adding, "We will strive to enrich our society by finding and supporting those who work for a better world."
Professor Baek Moo-hyun of the Department of Chemistry at KAIST (Deputy Director of IBS) who received the Science Award, established mechanisms enabling superior catalyst development through the development of new computational chemistry research methodologies using computers, and is a pioneer of transformative research that proposed an innovative paradigm capable of predicting and designing various chemical reactions.
Yongnam Middle School in Sacheon, Gyeongnam, the recipient of the Education Award, overcame the crisis of school closure due to regional population decline through active innovative efforts by teachers and enthusiastic participation and support from students, parents, and local governments, achieving innovative changes in educational spaces and presenting a successful future model for rural schools by introducing future-oriented digital education methods.
The nonprofit organization Child Welfare Practice Association Seum, awarded the Volunteer Award, was highly evaluated for practicing various humanitarian activities supporting children of incarcerated individuals and their families, who are in the blind spots of human rights in our society, as well as playing a leading role in expanding social awareness and institutional changes to build a social support base.
Jung Han, CEO of i3system Co., Ltd., the recipient of the Technology Award, has been devoted solely to developing infrared imaging sensors for over 30 years as a first-generation researcher in the domestic infrared imaging sensor field. He succeeded in developing and mass-producing Korea's first infrared imaging sensor, a core technology in national strategic fields such as defense, space, and medical sectors, and through continuous technological development, laid the foundation for Korea to become a leading country in infrared imaging sensor technology.
This year's ceremony was attended by a minimal number of people, including the awardees and POSCO TJ Park Award officials, due to the impact of COVID-19; however, the entire ceremony was broadcast live on the YouTube channel, allowing many people to participate online.
